ketheltunnel

Structural fire assessment existing road tunnels

Rijkswaterstaat (NL)

Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, we performed advanced structural fire assessments for five operational road tunnels in the Netherlands.

The scope included:

  • Nonlinear thermo-mechanical finite element analyses of the structural response under fire

  • Analyses with and without concrete spalling

  • Quantification of post-fire damage and repairability

The results formed the engineering basis for post-fire repair strategies and optimisation of passive fire protection measures.

Nationale bank van België

Fire resistance assessment existing floor – National Bank of Belgium

Jensen Hughes (BE)

As part of the renovation of the National Bank of Belgium, we performed an advanced 3D thermo-mechanical assessment of the existing reinforced concrete floor system.

The study included:

  • Detailed 3D finite element modelling of the structural system

  • Evaluation of cracking, plastic zone development and residual load-bearing capacity

  • Assessment of the need for additional passive fire protection

The findings formed the engineering basis for optimising passive fire protection while fully maintaining the required safety performance.

Thermo-mechanical damage assessment under cyclic steam loading

Sanacon (BE)

For Sanacon, we investigated the structural condition of an existing concrete structure subjected to repeated exposure to high-temperature steam.

The scope included:

  • Thermal and mechanical simulations of cyclic steam exposure

  • Evaluation of internal cracking and stress development

  • Technical substantiation of optimal protective measures

Our numerical analyses enabled an objective quantification of the extent and depth of degradation and supported the definition of targeted repair and protection strategies, ensuring structural safety and long-term durability.

Structural fire assessment of steel mezzanine structure

Astute Fire (UK)

For Astute Fire, we investigated the structural behaviour of a steel mezzanine structure subjected to localised fire exposure of one or more unprotected columns.

Using numerical simulations, a representative steel structure was analysed to:

  • Model the thermal response of unprotected steel columns

  • Evaluate load redistribution within the structural system

  • Assess global stability under localised column heating

  • Determine the need for further detailed project-specific analyses

The study demonstrated to the fire and rescue service that there was no early progressive collapse under a very severe fire scenario. This provided necessary confidence in the fire strategy whereby the entire structure remained unprotected.

Project executed by the founders prior to the establishment of Pyro Engineering.

Waterwolftunnel

Structural fire assessment  Waterwolftunnel

Province Noord-Holland (NL)

We carried out a structural fire assessment of the reinforced concrete tunnel structure under severe fire loading.

The study included:

  • Nonlinear thermo-mechanical finite element analyses of the structural response under fire

  • Analyses with and without concrete spalling

  • Quantification of thermally induced damage following fire exposure

The results formed the engineering basis for the planned renovation strategy.
